Handwritten annotations by Ernst von Leutsch in two copies of his book Grundriss zu Vorlesungen über die griechische Metrik (An outline of lectures on Greek meter), published by Dieterich, Göttingen, 1841 (XII, 444 p.). At the time of publication Leutsch was a professor without chair (ausserordentlicher Professor) at the University of Göttingen, where he had begun as a lecturer in 1831; he was promoted to full professor in 1842. Leutsch says in the foreword that he conceived the book initially as a guide to the delivery of his own lectures on the subject (Ms. Coll. 841 also contains a manuscript of his lecture notes; see Boxes 13 to 16); the text is essentially an outline accompanied by quotations and bibliographical references, in extensive footnotes. Neither of the annotated books contains a signature or any personal marks of ownership. Copy 1, which has wider margins and has been rebound in what is probably a library binding (26 cm.), has copious, neatly written annotations in ink, mostly in the margins, of a consistent appearance throughout; one can say with some certainty that they are entirely in Leutsch's hand. The annotations are predominantly additional quotations from and references to classical texts, and references to the scholarly literature, with the latest date cited being 1859 (p. 62). Some are corrections or emendations, mainly pertaining to spelling or the numbering/lettering of the outline. In one instance, a remark (reihen unter einander) pertains to a line break in the heading (p. 360). The annotations in Copy 1 extend throughout the book but are less frequent in the last third of it. Copy 2 appears to be in its original binding; it has fewer annotations, mostly in the first half, and they are of a more hurried and varied appearance (with more use of pencil in addition to ink). Possibly some notes are in a different hand. Rarely could any overlap be verified in the content of the annotations in the two copies; a reference to C.A.J. Hoffmann, Quaestiones Homericae, 1842/1848, p. 102, is found in both, as well as minor typographical corrections, p. 14, 117. Copy 2 has very few dates in the references; the latest found was 1848. A leaf bearing notes, mostly in Greek, that appear to be in Leutsch's hand is laid in.
